Exhibitions

Interesting exhibitions this year include the newly renovated Thielska Galleriet, Stockholm. It houses the collection of Ernst Thiel, who supported Munch and collected his works during his lifetime. The collection’ s masterpieces include The Girls on the Bridge and the 1907 Sick Child. At the re-opened Munch Museum in Oslo, where security is so much heavier since the theft and recovery of The Scream and Madonna that locals call it ‘Fortress Munch’, you won’t see either of the stolen pictures as they are being restored. The permanent collection is on show and in January a special exhibition opens, concentrating on Munch as a draughtsman, and paying special attention to the important works of the 1890s. If you’re in Oslo during February and March you can also catch The Mirror of Nature: Nordic Landscape paintings, 1840-1900 at the National Gallery. It is fascinating to contrast Munch’s work at the time with that of his compatriots.
